7 Reasons Why Reading to Little Kids Matters

Reading together in the early years is one of the best things you can do for your child. It’s not just a nice bedtime routine; it builds skills and confidence that last a lifetime.

Here’s what reading with your kids before the age of 5 (and after) truly does:

Building Vocabulary
Little kids soak up new words like sponges. Reading introduces them to all sorts of ideas and language. The more you read, the bigger their vocabulary grows and the easier school becomes later on.

Time Together
Snuggling up with a book creates a calm, warm moment between you and your child. It makes them feel safe and loved. That simple connection is really important for their emotional development.

Imagination
Books let kids picture places they’ve never been and things they’ve never seen. They start to dream, create stories in their heads, and solve little problems; all while having fun.

Learning to Read
Hearing stories helps them understand how books work — how letters make words, how stories have a beginning, middle and end. These basics make learning to read much smoother when the time comes.

Sitting Still and Listening
Regular reading teaches kids to focus and listen. That skill helps with everything from kindy to schoolwork to sport.

Talking with Others
Chatting about the story. “What do you think will happen next?” or “How does that make you feel?” It helps them learn to express themselves and talk with others.

Love of Learning
When reading feels fun and cosy, kids start to love books. That love of stories often turns into a love of learning that sticks with them for years.

Reading to your child under five doesn’t need to be perfect or long. Ten minutes a day makes a big difference. Just pick a book, get comfy, and enjoy the story together.

At Great Fun Books we read with our kids every day and that’s why we make our books in the first place!

Simple stories kids actually like, with little lessons tucked inside each one. The kind you don’t mind reading again and again. Stories should be fun for kids and feel good for parents.

Got a favourite book you read with your little one? Leave it in the comments. We would love to hear what works in your house.
